Dissapointed : Canon PowerShot SD980IS 12MP Digital Camera with 5x Ultra Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 3-inch LCD (Gold)

First of all let me just say that I really wanted to love this camera. The design looks great, it feels solid in your hands, the wide-screen touch screen is fun to use, and the ultra wide angle lens opens up tons of creative possibilities. Sadly I fell out of love very quickly after taking some test shots with this camera.

I compared my test shots to my previous pocket cam, a 6MP Casio which produces satisfactory photos in good light and poor photos in low light conditions.

I love the twilight photos I was able to take with this camera while walking around Union Square in San Francisco. The colors were great, photos had good detail, the street lights sparkled and most of the photos came out relatively sharp thanks to the stabilized lens. I was thrilled that the photos were much better than what I was able to produce with the Casio.

Indoors in the evening the camera work just as well for such a small camera, I took very few flash photos, but all the available light photos I took in a dimly lit living room turned out very well for such a small camera. Sure there was plenty of noise if you looked at the low light photos up close, but over all the immages were ery pleasing to the eye when viewed on a 1080P, 52" HDTV.

Then I took the camera outside on a sunny day. Colors were decent, but the photos were very soft as if the lens were dirty. This was especially noticeable when taking photos of trees, flowers, grass.... anything detailed looked blurred, buildings and people looked fine. Daytime photos also lacked contrast, giving them a very flat quality. I tired different settings, I activated the enhanced contrast setting, it helped a little. I activated the foliage setting and it improved the detail as well, but my old Casio still produced better photos in auto mode when compared side by side on my HDTV. I left the camera on auto ISO mode and most of the daytime photos were taken at 80 to 120 ISO.

Canon made a good camera when they designed the SD980, I just think they stuffed too many pixels into such a little camera and as a result the photos are very noisy, lack detail, and exhibit poor dynamic range.

I purchased this sub along with four new Def Tech Pro 1000 monitors and a Pro2000 center. I did not like the sound, and weak aesthetics of the Def Tech 1000 sub, thus I turned to Jbl. Have owned many of their products over the years and have been quite please, though they have gone a limited mainstream, and would retain only their high end offering.

Customer Service: Couldn't believe it, but my first one that came was dead on arrival. Nothing, cables, receiver setting, just one big heavy dead black box. Contacted Jbl, they had me try an analog run straight through the Dvd output to be sure, but again nothing. They told me to return it as it was obviously defective. They even offered to replace itself themselves if I had any trouble straight through the retailer! I'll take that kind of service and caring any day!

Customer service, part 2: Called Amazon and explained the situation, they sent a new one at no charge, overnight and sending a call tag to return the bad one. I could not ask for great buyer service, my hat's off to you, and empowering your buyer service rep's to rectify the situation. No haggling, complaining, or needing to talk your way up the ladder to get something done. This is the makings of a buyer for life.

Performance: Sounds wonderful. Sealed sub's like this are very musical, and very very tight. I love this type of sound. Ported subs are a cheap way to get the specs better, Imo, and requires alot less power. This sub has power to spare. It might not get all the way down like some habitancy like, but this baby is low and super tight, not woofy just to vibrate the walls. Try some Dts or Dd 5.1 concert videos, and you will know exactly what I mean. At +/- $400 bucks or so, predicted value, and as bonus, has a nice small footprint to categorically position.

I honestly do love the video this camera shoots. If that's all I wanted it for, this would be a 5-star product. But over time I am getting more and more disappointed with the quality of the photos. Maybe my unit is a dud, but the noise seems to be getting worse. I just think that an outdoor photo, taken in full daylight, should Not be a noisy as the pix from this camera are. I miss my Sd550. I may have to just suck it up an switch back, or look for something else to use as a point and shoot for when I don't want to carry my Xti colse to with me. ================================== I ultimately upgraded my Sd550, which was getting pretty beat up and tired. I was honestly looking for a >3x visual zoom (4x isn't a huge improvement, but it's sufficient for a 12.1mp camera) I honestly honestly like the layout on this one, the huge screen (I never used the viewfinder on the 550) and the playback button at the top right. The Hd video quality seems good to me (I have a more high-priced Hd videocamera, so this for me is not going to be used when I know I want to shoot a lot of video), but I found the controls for playback confusing (it's not clear at All just looking at the camera that you have to press up on the operate wheel and Then press the set button. The 550 used Set/Set to playback. I have to be particular not to use Set/Set because the first Set launches the delete function (!) I also found the purple lines caused by engaging lights to be much more harsh on the 960 than they ever were on the 550. In fact, I had to go back to the 550 to see if it even did that (It did). It's just more noticable on the 960 but that could be because it's filming in Hd. There are no purple lines when I am taking still photos (even if you see it on the viewfinder) so you just have to be extra particular about pointing the camera toward the sun if the sun is fairly low in the sky. I'll update this review as I have more feedback. ====== Update to review on 4/15: I still like the camera, the Hd video quality is Amazing, but as a pixel peeper, indoor shots tend to be honestly noisy. Now maybe I shouldn't be zooming that far in on a 12 megapixel image shot indoors, but it is something I want to warn habitancy about. I'm going to try printing one of the noisy shots to see what it looks like when compressed down into a 4x6 size. I also find some of the shots blurrier than I'd like. Like the other reviewer, this was a move from an sd550, and maybe that is just the many pocket camera ever, because both of us are a limited disappointed with the quality when you compare the two.
